Read the fine print

What “remote” means in a Canadian job ad

Two listings can both say remote and still mean very different things. The location line tells you who the employer can actually hire.

Remote – Canada

You must live here

The employer hires through a Canadian payroll or entity. Expect provincial employment standards to apply, and pay in Canadian dollars.

Remote – North America

Canada or the US

Common with US companies. Check whether they employ Canadians directly, use an employer-of-record service or only sign contractors.

Anywhere

Open worldwide

Usually a contract. You invoice the company, handle your own tax and CPP, and pay is often quoted in US dollars.

A two-minute check that saves a lot of trouble

Most fake remote jobs fail at least one of these points. If something feels off, send us the link through the contact form, or call the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.

  1. The company exists outside the ad: a website, a real address and staff you can find.
  2. You never pay anything – not for training, software, a laptop or a background check.
  3. Nobody sends you a cheque to deposit and asks you to forward part of it.
  4. The interview is a real conversation, not only a chat on a messaging app.
  5. Your SIN and banking details are requested only after a written job offer.
Questions

Asked often

Where do these job listings come from?

They are collected from public remote-job APIs, mainly Jobicy, and filtered for positions open to people in Canada. Each listing names its source and links to the original ad – you always apply with the employer, never through us.

Do I pay tax differently if my employer is American?

If you live in Canada you report your worldwide income here. When no Canadian tax is withheld from your pay, you may have to pay tax by instalments. As a contractor you also pay both the employee and employer share of CPP. Our guide to freelancing in Canada covers the basics.

Can I deduct my home office?

Only with the detailed method and a T2200 signed by your employer; the temporary flat rate ended after the 2022 tax year. The details are in our guide to working from home: rights and taxes.
